Horizon Report 2013

The Horizon Report – a collaborative project between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the Educause Learning Initiative (ELI) – identifies and describes the 6 emerging technologies and practices most likely to have a large impact over the coming five years in higher education.

The 6 emerging technologies and practices are divided into 3 time frames based on the expected time to adoption. Below is an overview, but be sure to view the entire report: Horizon Report 2013.


Time-to-Adoption: One Year or Less

  • Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs)
  • Tablet Computing

Time-to-Adoption: Two to Three Years

  • Games and Gamification
  • Learning Analytics

Time-to-Adoption: Four to Five Years

  • 3D Printing
  • Wearable Technology
